Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich
In the 2009 fiscal year, the U.S. government spent $55 billion on food stamps (I refuse to call it SNAP). In 2012, it rose to more than $80 billion.
Despite the criticism he received, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was correct: Barack Obama is the food stamp President. Of course, George W. Bush can’t be let off the hook.
The number of people using food stamps dropped substantially during Bill Clinton’s second term, only to experience a steady climb during George W. Bush’s time in office. The increase wasn’t as severe as the last few years, but it was substantial.
Where have all the true fiscal conservatives gone?
